moving to sarasota! [18 Nov 2008|08:43pm]

I was recently accepted into Ringling's Graphic design class for spring 2009, and NEEEEED a place to live.

My girlfriend, Bianca, dog Suzie and I need a studio/efficiency/duplex/house for relatively cheap.

We want to spend between $400-$600 at the most. Hopefully we can find a place within a close distance to Ringling (biking distance would be awesome)

if you have a place, know someone who does, or can refer me to someone, I would be appreciative.

thanks,
Ben

Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary in Wimauma seeks volunteers [14 Sep 2008|04:07pm]
insomniac106
Elmira's is a big cat sanctuary in Wimauma in Manatee County. They've had to move to a new location after their landlord evicted them, and the people that run the center split it among their personal credit cards. They're looking for funding, yes, but they're also looking for volunteers to work with animals. Theyve found that charitable donations are down, but with the economic climate, people are apparently less willing to volunteer. Pictures are here and here, and more information here.

Call for Artists

Alienation Art

AlienationArt@gmail.com

November 11, 2007

Held at The Office Gallery and Art Studios in Orlando, Florida

Presented and organized by Claire Balgemann, Dawn Borglund, Katie McLemore

Alienation Art is a community-wide art exhibition held at The Office Gallery and Art Studios featuring visual, digital and performance art. The organizers of this exhibition are seeking to promote art and artists in the community while furthering the consideration and understanding of alienation on a personal, relational and global level.

Subject Matter: Physical or digital art including paintings, drawings, photographs, digital prints, sculpture, film, animation and hypertexts centered around the theme of Alienation. Art may be social, political, or personal in nature. Each artist may submit up to three pieces.

Deadline: Completed art must be submitted by November 5, 2007. E-mail AlienationArt@gmail.com to arrange art submission with Claire, Dawn or Katie. Art will be stored with the organizers until the close of the exhibition, not at The Office Gallery and Art Studios.

Accepted Work: Hanging pieces must be ready to display with standard eye hooks and wire. Sculptures must be accompanied with a pedestal if the piece requires one. For digital art, include in your application if you would like to submit digital art but can find no other way of obtaining the relevant technology to display it.

The organizers of this event are in charge of displaying and presenting all submitted art pieces in the space provided by The Office Gallery and Art Studios. Any work deemed by the organizers to be unsafe, not gallery ready, or outside the theme will not be displayed at the event. We will do our utmost to handle all artwork properly; however, the organizers of this event are not responsible for damaged work. Artists are responsible for insuring their own work. The organizers of this have the right to hold all submitted artwork from November 5, 2007 to November 12, 2007 and may display submitted artwork for the duration of the event. Artists will not be paid for the display of their artwork but artists may attach a price to their art in the book of artists if the price is submitted in the application.

In the rare event that an art piece is damaged, I will not hold the organizers of Alienation Art responsible. I agree to have my name, biography and the art piece’s information displayed either near the art piece or in the book of artists.

So, anyone have Pratt for illustration? I checked ratemyprofessors.com but it didn't help me much. What's the class like? Would I be insane to take him for illustration (and possibly portfolio) in my senior year, or is the workload doable? I'm really considering his class, but I would like to sleep occasionally if possible.

Also, how about Dunnick? I haven't really heard much about him, but that's my second choice at this point. Is there anyone in particular you reccommend? (Besides Fiore, I've got him this year and I like to take different teachers year-to-year if I can.) Thanks for your help!

Certificates [06 Mar 2007|01:05am]

kikkervisje_nu
Hello, I was just wondering if anybody here is a certificate student (or has completed a certificate)?  If so, I would appreciate any comments you have on how you feel/felt about the program or how useful you believe it to be for moving into design-related careers (as opposed to a bachelors).

I've recently finished my B.A. in anthropology at The College of William and Mary, and am hoping to explore design related options.  While at school, I realized that I much preferred my theatrical lighting course (and etc) to my social science courses.  I love installation art, cinematography, color, texture, photography, and interior design--although short of theatrical applications and some amateur photography, I unfortunately have little practical experience.  In short, I love design; and I want to see how I fare in a design-centric setting while moving towards professional competency, but without devoting another 4 (or 3.5 in my case) years to an undergraduate degree; because, at this point, I am ready to start a career-related life beyond college as soon as I feel I have the technical and creative skills to be marketable in a field of interest to me.  (I am mainly considering the Interior Concepts certificate, although the photography program is also of interest to me.)  Any comments people may have would be appreciated (from the two certificates I mentioned or otherwise).

(I chose to post this here rather than the freshman community since, although it would be my first year at Ringling, I've already been through college once; and I figured you all might be better able to answer my questions.  Hope that's acceptable!)

A plea for the masses! [06 Feb 2007|11:19pm]

[ mood | rushed ]

So, as anyone who lives on campus knows, housing shite of doom is due next week, and that either means it's squatting time, or the time has come to find a few good men/women to cling to in the hopes of getting campus housing. My roommates and I had expected ourselves to be lumped in the first group, but we found out yesterday that we're going to be involuntarily shoved into the latter.
One of my current roommates isn't going to have enough credits to live on campus next year (you need twelve per semester, she only has nine), and the others and I are suddenly scrounging around for a new fourth before housing papers are due on the 13th. Two of us are without a mode of transport, so living off campus is not an option. If you are a chick in need of some last minute roommates for next year, we're in the same boat. Three would-be senior illustrators, friendly, kind folk who smell quite nice on a normal basis!

Any takers? Please reply, or refer us to anyone you know that'd like to chill with us next year!

Thanks be to you much,
Tiffany
